Alexsander Nevsky Cathedral - Tallinn |
|
|
Tallinn day. Mark and I decided to just wander around on our own instead of taking a tour. We took a taxi directly to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral so I could take photos of the church from the outside (no desire to go in after seeing all the Russian churches). I took lots of photos (going to have to figure out how to change white cloudy sky to blue!) and then we wandered around the whole old upper town. We looked at the church as we wandered by and did not overlook the two main overlooks overlooking the lower town. From there we worked our way down to the lower town on Short Leg Street with some rather steep steps under and through the upper walls. In the lower town we wandered around and looked at the main square, wandered along Pikk Street and stopped at a café in the main square so Mark could have a local Estonian beer. We both felt that Tallinn was a bit like an Epcot version of a town – totally touristy, almost too perfect, with wayyyyy too many souvenir shops. We walked through a main gate, passed the Maritime Museum, the monument to the ferry disaster and then headed back to the ship. Once we exited the old town it was very easy to find our way back to the ship for 2 reasons – we could follow along like sheep with the other cruise passengers (baaaaaah) and our ship was the biggest one in port (but, surprisingly, it never feels too big or too crowded onboard). We stopped along the pier to take photos of the Crown Princess and were happy to have one day out of 6 port days that got us back on board by a mere 12 noon.
